Student kept locked up after dynamite scare
The Associated Press
WARREN, Ohio A 17-year-old charged with bringing two sticks of dynamite and blasting caps to school must remain in juvenile custody until his arraignment, a magistrate ruled Friday.
At a detention hearing in Trumbull County Juvenile Court, the suspect was charged with possessing explosive devices on school property.
Champion Police Chief Dennis Steinbeck said the prosecutor will be consulted as to whether the teen will be tried as an adult.
The boy was stopped and searched Thursday by Champion High School officials who had been tipped by the teen's father. No one was hurt and it wasn't clear whether the boy had intended to harm anyone.
The boy's father, an ex-miner who had dynamite at home, had called police and said he was concerned his son may have taken a gun. No weapon was found.
The dynamite was removed from the 520-student school and detonated near this community about 50 miles southeast of Cleveland. Students were evacuated and sent home early.
