Little Emma Schroeder ran up to the mirrored, curved beverage bar and stared at the reflection of her elaborately painted face.

“I'm a princess!” said Emma, 5, as she showed off the white, hot pink, electric blue and glittering gold design on her face.

Her brother, E.J., 6, made up as a “lion,” gave his mightiest roar.

The Schroeder children from Edgewood were among dozens who participated in Saturday's face-painting event at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, one of 143 Fine Arts Sampler Weekend events at 47 venues.

Free presentations for all ages in dance, theater, music and art conclude today.

“It's a wonderful way to introduce the kids to the arts without being out a lot of money,”said the children's mother, Jamie, 35.

Her husband, Steve, 35, said, “It's especially good for people like us who have a large family and are fairly young.” The couple have four children and also brought one of E.J.'s friends.

Earlier, the Schroeders attended a performance by the My Nose Turns Red Theatre Company, in which children were taught clown tactics such as juggling.

The family planned to attend the Madcap Productions performance of The Frog Prince at the Cincinnati Art Museum.

“All of the events we've been to have been great. I'm just really pleased they have them,” Mr. Schroeder said.

The 16th annual Fine Arts Sampler Weekend, sponsored by Cincinnati Bell and Frisch's Big Boy, is free. For a list of today's events, go to Cincinnati.Com. Questions? Call 230-5000.
