Student stunt draws police
The Associated Press
LEXINGTON Three University of Kentucky students who thought it would be fun to re-create a stunt from the MTV show Jackass were arrested on a misdemeanor charge, according to police.
The incident began around 12:45 a.m. EST Friday when two students Robert Keith Wigginton, 19, and Sixfrido Mendez, 19 pretended to assault one of their friends, Aaron Thomas Cox, 18, and force him into the trunk of a car.
Several people who saw the stunt near the Kirwan Blanding Residence Hall complex called the police, said Commander Travis Manley, spokesman for the University of Kentucky Police.
Mr. Cox appeared to be struggling and, Commander Manley said, that was one of the reasons we took it so seriously.
The act convinced some witnesses.
The people who did call in were really quite frantic, Commander Manley said.
Three UK police cars responded, and officers emerged from their cars with guns drawn. Once Mr. Cox was freed from the trunk, he told police that he and his friends were just goofing around, copying something from the MTV show.
The three students, who live in Kirwan, were charged with disorderly conduct. They were lodged in the Fayette County Detention Center.
Mr. Cox is a freshman and Mr. Wigginton is a sophomore. Both are from Shelbyville. Mr. Mendez is a freshman from Elizabethtown.
MTV spokeswoman Marnie Malter said verbal warnings are given throughout the show stating that the stunts should not be imitated.
