Components of exercise, good form will trim belly

By Dave Patania
Enquirer contributor

Question: What is a sure-fire way to get rid of a belly with regard to exercise?

Answer: Be sure not to separate any of the components of exercise (cardiovascular, strength training, flexibility and nutrition) because they are parts of one system that, if used correctly, can garner awesome results.

In your case, if you want great abs, the “system” must be used. There is a layer of fat between your skin and muscle that will not decrease unless you eat healthy, low-fat, low-sugar, non-processed foods; strength train to increase lean muscle mass, which will help your body utilize calories better even while at rest; perform consistent cardiovascular work at least four days per week (20-60 minutes per day) to burn more calories, and include stretching movements to increase blood flow and prevent injury.

With regard to specific exercises for your abdominals, there are many to choose from. Have a fitness professional take you through some different moves so as to find which ones you will enjoy doing most consistently. It is important to have someone show you how to perform abdominal exercises correctly; this will ensure better results. It is important that you use strict form and technique when doing these exercises because strict form will define and shape your abdominal muscles a lot better than just going through the motions.

Q: Which type of beer has fewer carbohydrates? A: Beer, light beer or not, is just empty calories that your body can easily store as fat. I am not telling you to never drink beer, I am just saying that if your goal is to keep the carbohydrates low, keep the beer consumption low as well.
