Class gets peek inside Olympics

MORROW Mandy Combs is sharing the Olympic experience with her first-grade class at Morrow Elementary School.
Armed with a laptop computer and digital camera, Mrs. Combs, an intern in Lori Partin's class, is communicating with students from Salt Lake by sending digital photos and diary entries. The first-grade students have been reading a book, Elympics, about elephants who participate in the Olympics, tackling ice skating, bobsledding and ice hockey.
In this classroom, there is no talk of Olympic scandals or worries over security. The majority of the kids simply want to know where Utah is.
It's a medium state, said 7-year-old Chelsea Everson, who added that she liked the snow-capped mountains and the Olympic torch that seems to tower into the sky.
I think it's in Antarctica, said 6-year-old Eric Jordan. Somewhere cold.
Does anyone live there? asked 6-year-old Rikki Reese, who said her favorite Olympic sport was bobsledding.
Mrs. Partin, who has been reading and showing pictures sent by Mrs. Combs daily to her class, said although the children may not know much about the Olympics, they have a patriotic spirit, always asking if the U.S. teams were winners in any events.
Mrs. Combs, who attends the University of Cincinnati, is with her mother, who won a trip for two to the Olympics in a credit-card contest.
In Mrs. Combs' daily e-mails, she tells students about the events she attended for the day and describes the sports for her students. She noted her favorites are skating and ice hockey.
When I was little, I wanted to be a ski jumper or an ice skater, said Mrs. Combs. So this is really a dream come true.
