By Ron Liebau
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Two veteran Cincinnati politicians will square off in a Democratic primary in May for the open 33rd Ohio House District seat.
Cincinnati City Councilwoman Minette Cooper and former city councilman Tyrone Yates filed petitions Thursday with the Hamilton County Board of Elections. A third Democratic candidate, Leroy Hopkins of Bond Hill, also filed.
The winner of the Democratic primary will run against Sandra Hall, a former Deer Park councilwoman.
The newly configured 33rd House District is represented by Democratic state Rep. Sam Britton, who cannot run again because of term limits.
The district includes the Cincinnati neighborhoods of Evanston, Walnut Hills, Roselawn, Bond Hill and Pleasant Ridge. It also includes Deer Park, Elmwood Place, Golf Manor, Norwood, Silverton, St. Bernard and small parts of Springfield and Sycamore townships.
Republicans will have a contested primary in the 28th House District. It is represented by Wayne Coates, D-Forest Park.
The party has endorsed Jim Raussen of Springdale. He was defeated by Mr. Coates in the 2000 general election. Mr, Raussen will be opposed by Doug Mink of Sharonville in the primary.
The district includes Blue Ash, Evendale, Forest Park, Montgomery, Reading, Springdale and Wyoming.
Other filing highlights:
Rep. Rob Portman of Terrace Park will face the winner of a three-way Democratic primary in the 2nd Congressional District. The candidates: Roy Mitchell of Dayton, Charles Sanders of Waynesville and Tony Stephens of Piketon.
Jean Siebenaler of Green Township will not have a contested Democratic primary for county commissioner. Marilyn Hyland of Indian Hill has decided not to seek the party's nomination but may run as an independent in November.
Phil Heimlich, former Cincinnati councilman, is the endorsed Republican candidate. Roy McGrath of Clifton has also filed as a Republican.
Incumbent Tom Neyer is not seeking re-election.

In the open 7th State Senate District, Stephen Anthony Fischer of Mount Lookout filed unopposed as a Democrat. He will meet Republican Robert Schuler, a former state representative from Sycamore Township. Incumbent Richard Finan, R-Evendale, cannot run for another term.
In the 9th State Senate District, Republican Ronald Wieczorkowski of Price Hill has filed. He will face incumbent Sen. Mark Mallory, D-West End in November.
Petitions will be certified by the elections board Feb. 28.
In Clermont County, two Republicans David Caudill, the current county clerk of courts, and Scott Croswell, an attorney who is the son of the late former Clermont County Commissioner Robert Croswell will compete for the nomination for a commissioner's seat.
The winner will run against Democrat Gregg Conrad. Incumbent Martha Dorsey is not seeking re-election.
