D'Amico loses mount

Valdale Stakes today at Turfway

Enquirer staff and news services

Northern Kentucky jockey Tony D'Amico has lost the mount on Fountain of Youth runner-up Harlan's Holiday, but he will continue to ride Risen Star winner Repent. The Daily Racing Form reported that trainer Ken McPeek has not decided who will ride Harlan's Holiday in the $1 million Grade I Florida Derby on March 16.

McPeek has nixed the idea of racing Repent in the March 23 U.A.E Derby in Dubai. Repent instead will race next in the Louisiana Derby March 10 at Fair Grounds or March 23 Lane's End Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park. “I could have gone over there and won,” McPeek told the Blood-Horse magazine, “but the trip coming back would have compromised his chances in the Kentucky Derby. He's best with four to five weeks between races.”

The Kentucky Derby is May 4 at Churchill Downs.

        TURFWAY PARK:

Emeraldforajudge, the slight 3-1 morning line favorite over Ideveter (7-2), heads a field of 10 3-year-old fillies for today's Valdale Stakes, which serves as a prep for the $150,000 Bourbonette Breeders' Cup on Spiral Stakes Day. Emeraldforajudge finished third in the Tiffany Lass at Fair Grounds. Ideveter has won three straight races at Turfway.

Two other contenders are Iffy, the beaten favorite when fourth in the Cincinnati Trophy, and Honest Deceiver, the runner-up in that race.

        • The Florence track, which has suffered from competition with Indiana gambling boats, increased purses 7 percent for all non-stakes races, effective Friday. There are several factors for the increase, including a mild winter that has allowed more racing and a new schedule that has helped increase field sizes. “Many races, especially the stakes on Saturdays, have featured large, competitive fields, which are always good for handle,” track racing director Rick Leigh said.
