Reetta Piipari scored 24 points, including five 3-pointers, and Amy Waugh had 20 points and eight assists as the Xavier women defeated Duquesne 82-61 Friday night.
Piipari was 8-of-14 from the field and 5-of-10 from 3-point range for the Musketeers (10-17, 5-10 Atlantic 10). Xavier shot 50 percent (14-of-28) in the second half to build on its 37-27 halftime lead.
Kate Kreager scored 15 points and Aida Sarajlija added 13 for XU. Both had nine rebounds.
Candace Futrell scored 16 points to lead Duquesne (13-13, 8-7).
Anderson 75, MSJ 58
Angel Hall scored 24 points to lead Anderson over Mount St. Joseph's in the semifinals of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament.
Rebecca Petty and Virginia Grace each scored 10 points for the Lions (12-15), who trailed 44-34 at halftime and finished with 25 turnovers.
Anderson (20-6) will play Defiance in the HCAC final today.
UCLA:
Forward Matt Barnes was suspended by the Pac-10 for one game because of a flagrant foul during the Bruins' 69-51 loss to California Thursday. Barnes will serve the suspension when No.25 UCLA plays No.10 Stanford today.
With 2:24 left Thursday night, Barnes threw a forearm to the head of Cal point guard Shantay Legans, who was face-down on the court for more than five minutes. Cal coach Ben Braun said Legans suffered a concussion, and didn't know if he would be able to play today against No.20 Southern California.
KANSAS:
Drew Gooden, the Big 12's leading scorer and rebounder, is all but admitting that he plans to make himself eligible for the NBA draft.
This will probably be my last year, the 6-foot-10 junior said at a news conference. We don't know yet. So I'm not going to take anything for granted.
Gooden, who has led the Jayhawks to a 24-2 record, including 13-0 in the conference with three regular-season games left, would be only the second high-profile player under Roy Williams to leave early. Paul Pierce, who passed up his senior season, is now with the Boston Celtics.
This could be my last go-around, Gooden said. So I'm trying to enjoy it every day in practice and trying to enjoy just the whole college experience.
