The Cincinnati Enquirer
NEWPORT Italianfest 2002, which will be held June 13-16 on Riverboat Row between the Taylor-Southgate and L&N bridges, has been named a top 20 event for June by the Southeast Tourism Society.
Italianfest, now in its 11th year, celebrates Newport's Italian heritage with food booths and music. It attracts about 100,000 visitors over three days.
The Southeast Tourism Society is a nonprofit organization created to develop, market and promote travel to and within the southeast United States. Italianfest competed against festivals in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
Hillbilly Days, an annual three-day festival held in April in Pikeville that attracts 100,000 people to the eastern Kentucky town, also won a top 20 award. Proceeds from Hillbilly Days go to the Shriners Hospitals in Lexington and Cincinnati.
