Where does buffalo roam? Monroe

By Richelle Thompson
The Cincinnati Enquirer

MONROE — This Butler County city can add a new slogan: Where the buffalo roams.

On the hooves of the great cow caper in Cincinnati, a 400- to 500-pound buffalo led police on a five-hour chase Saturday through neighborhoods, near Hustler Hollywood and Monroe High School.

Four buffaloes and a bull escaped from nearby LB Ranch and wound up in the front yard of a home on Ridgeview Lane. Ranch hands rounded up the bull and three buffaloes, but the fourth hoofed it toward Interstate 75.

The animal worked its way through several neighborhoods, and police warned residents — including guests at a child's birthday party — to go inside. Then the buffalo headed to the high school, where police thought they had it cornered on a baseball field, before the animal made a run for home.

The brownish-red buffalo had horns and “great big eyes that looked kind of wild when he was coming at ya,” said Monroe Police Chief Ernest Howard.

By the time the buffalo ran into a farm off Ohio 63, owned by Bob Majors, 10 to 15 cars were following police through the city, anxious to get in on the chase.

A tranquilizer gun and a lasso brought the animal down, and the buffalo was returned to its home without injury.

Mr. Majors figures this little city of 7,133 has one up on Cincinnati.

“We got our man quicker than they got theirs.”
