Sanders leads NKU rally to beat Quincy

The Cincinnati Enquirer

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — Craig Sanders scored 22 points, including a 3-point shot with 14 seconds remaining, as Northern Kentucky University defeated Quincy (Ill.) 79-75 Saturday.

Sanders (McNicholas High School) and fellow senior Carl Mitchell were playing their final home game for the Norse. Mitchell had 17 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots, and his steal with 38 seconds to go set up a Sanders 3-pointer that gave NKU a 77-73 lead.

“Carl Mitchell made a huge play defensively, and then Sanders made an NBA-type 3-point shot to ice the win,” NKU coach Ken Shields said.

Darnell Fields had 12 points and 12 rebounds as NKU (19-7, 15-55 Great Lakes Valley Conference) overcame a four-point deficit in the final three minutes.

Sanders, who extended his school record of consecutive games scoring in double figures to 46, needs just five points to become NKU's career scoring leader. He has 1,976 points and trails Brady Jackson, who finished with 1,981 points for NKU in 1980.

The Norse begin GLVC Tournament play at 1p.m. Thursday at Evansville, Ind., against either Bellarmine or Wisconsin-Parkside.

        Women
        NKU 75, Quincy 58

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — Michelle Cottrell scored 22 points to lead Northern Kentucky University, the No.9 team in the women's NCAA Division II poll, over Quincy (Ill.).

Cottrell (Boone County High School) was 8-of-10 from the field for the Norse (21-5, 17-3 GLVC), who clinched the GLVC regular-season title and the No.1 seed in conference tournament.

Bridget Flanagan (Mercy) scored 14 points for NKU. Suzie Smith (Boone County) added 12 points and Dana Schubeler had 11.

NKU will play St. Joseph's (Ind.) in the first round of the GLVC Tournament at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at Evansville, Ind.

        Miami 83, Ohio 71

OXFORD — Heather Cusick had 23 points and seven assists to lead the RedHawks to their fourth straight victory.

Jana Butler had 18 points and a team-high seven rebounds for Miami (16-10, 10-5 Mid-American Conference).

Colleen Day and Beth Roederer each scored 11 points, and Melanie Kozlowski added 10 for Miami, which moved into fifth place in the MAC standings.

Candace Bates scored 14 points to lead the Bobcats (12-14, 7-8), who trailed 33-23 at halftime and shot 29 percent from the field in the second half.
