The Cincinnati Enquirer
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. Craig Sanders scored 22 points, including a 3-point shot with 14 seconds remaining, as Northern Kentucky University defeated Quincy (Ill.) 79-75 Saturday.
Sanders (McNicholas High School) and fellow senior Carl Mitchell were playing their final home game for the Norse. Mitchell had 17 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots, and his steal with 38 seconds to go set up a Sanders 3-pointer that gave NKU a 77-73 lead.
Carl Mitchell made a huge play defensively, and then Sanders made an NBA-type 3-point shot to ice the win, NKU coach Ken Shields said.
Darnell Fields had 12 points and 12 rebounds as NKU (19-7, 15-55 Great Lakes Valley Conference) overcame a four-point deficit in the final three minutes.
Sanders, who extended his school record of consecutive games scoring in double figures to 46, needs just five points to become NKU's career scoring leader. He has 1,976 points and trails Brady Jackson, who finished with 1,981 points for NKU in 1980.
The Norse begin GLVC Tournament play at 1p.m. Thursday at Evansville, Ind., against either Bellarmine or Wisconsin-Parkside.
