Jail inmate indicted in police officer shooting

A man already jailed on multiple drug-related charges has been indicted for allegedly shooting at a Cincinnati police officer last summer.
Stevon Ramsey, 20, of the 1900 block of Westwood-Northern Boulevard, was indicted Thursday on two felonious assault counts stemming from a July 3 shooting that sent a bullet through Officer Calvin Johnson's right pant leg.
Mr. Ramsey has been at the Hamilton County Justice Center since Feb. 11 on six charges, including two for drug abuse and one for possession of cocaine, court records show. He is to appear in court March 1.
In 2000, Mr. Ramsey served nine months in state prison on a drug possession conviction.
This is someone we are glad to have off the streets, Hamilton County Prosecutor Mike Allen said Sunday. Anyone who has the gall to fire a weapon at a police officer needs to be locked away for as long as legally possible.
The early morning shooting was one of hundreds that erupted during last year's summer of violence.
Officer Johnson, 35, and his partner, Officer Todd Pierson, 31, pulled over a motorist in the West End at Linn and York streets whom they suspected of being in a stolen Honda and possessing crack.
As the officers approached the driver, a shot rang out, ripping through Officer Johnson's right pant leg. The bullet missed his leg and hit the back of a nearby Mercedes station wagon.
The officers did not return fire, and the man in the stolen Honda, Brian Wilcox, 19, of the West End, was charged with receiving stolen property. The shooter, however, got away.
It changed my life forever, Officer Johnson said Saturday of the shooting. You just don't know how blessed you are. One lucky shot and I would have been up there on the wall with all the other officers who died in the line of duty. And for what? Nothing.
Mr. Ramsey was identified as the shooter by two witnesses who recently testified before a grand jury, police said.
At the time of the shooting, Cincinnati police said the incident stemmed from a dispute between gangs. The shooter may have been firing at the officers in an attempt to help a fellow gang member escape, Officer Johnson said Saturday.
Since joining the Cincinnati Police Department in 1990, Officer Johnson has worked as a beat officer and gone undercover on drug crimes. Now, he serves as a SWAT team member and as school resource officer for 12 Cincinnati Public schools.
