Jordan's knee blow to playoff hopes
The Associated Press
WASHINGTON For 17 years, the only thing that kept Michael Jordan off the court for an extended period of time was his two retirements. Now a chronic knee injury has him thinking about a spell on the injured list, and it couldn't come at a worse time for his slumping Washington Wizards.
Jordan's knee was so sore he couldn't play the final 6:27 of a 92-80 loss Sunday night at Miami even when the outcome was still in doubt. After the game, Jordan seemed resigned to his fate and even talked about the possibility that the injury could force a closure to his career.
My mind is still consistent, Jordan said. But my body isn't.
Jordan and the Wizards had the day off Monday, with their next game Wednesday at home against Portland. He said there was a very strong possibility that he'll go on the injury list, which means he would miss a minimum of five games.
Jordan has been bothered by tendinitis in his right knee since he began workouts in preparation for his second comeback.
Blazers 88, 76ers 83
PHILADELPHIA Rasheed Wallace had 29 points and 10 rebounds as the Portland Trail Blazers won their season-high sixth in a row.
Scottie Pippen led a fourth-quarter comeback for the Blazers, scoring 11 points in an 18-2 run that helped Portland overcome a nine-point deficit.
'Wolves 97, Hornets 92
CHARLOTTE, N.C. Miami University graduate Wally Szczerbiak scored 24 points, and Kevin Garnett added 21 to lead the Minnesota. The Hornets lost their third third straight.
Rasho Nesterovic tipped in Garnett's miss with eight seconds to play to seal the win and give the Timberwolves a 3-1 mark on their road trip.
Clippers 90, Grizzlies 77
MEMPHIS Elton Brand had 27 points and a career-high 23 rebounds.
MAGIC: Guard Tracy McGrady is listed as day-to-day with a strained right foot. One day after achieving his first career triple-double, McGrady sat out the Magic's loss at Cleveland on Sunday night.
