No evidence of accelerant found in horse barn fire
By Terry Flynn
The Cincinnati Enquirer
HEBRON No ignitable fluids were found in evidence taken from a barn fire that killed 29 horses at Sandy Run Stables, the state's forensic laboratory in Frankfort reported Thursday.
Major Jack Banks, commander of the criminal investigation section of the Boone County Sheriff's Department, said the report indicated there were no ignitable fluids identified in evidence sent to the laboratory the day after the fire.
At this point, the fire is still of undetermined cause and the investigation continues, Major Banks said. We've interviewed everyone who had any connection to the stables.
The blaze began before 4 a.m. on Feb. 14 and destroyed the steel-and-frame barn building. At the time, state and local fire officials said they believed the fire was set because they had ruled out other causes.
Sandy Run owner Jim Dolwick, a retired Kentucky State Police trooper, said Thursday he had been informed of the forensic results. It's somewhat frustrating, he said. We don't know what to make of it now.
Mr. Dolwick said he and his wife, Judy, started the stable business nine years ago. He said he was 90 percent sure we will rebuild, but I still can't say for certain.
We'll probably make a final decision within a week. This is something we really enjoyed, and it involves the people who kept their horses here as well as us. This was a real family.
