UC set to expand online services for students

As University of Cincinnati students begin registering for spring classes today, more of them than ever will be using a program called One-Stop.
It's a concept that has allowed students since August to register for classes, check grades, and view their bills and payments online.
We really want to eliminate the administrative runaround - or the shuffle, as it's affectionately called at UC, said James Williams, director of enrollment services.
Since August, the Web site has had more than 338,378 visits, many to view grades.
Mr. Williams said school officials estimate that in two years, 90 percent of students will do most of their business online. And the other 10 percent will be able to go to the One-Stop Center, which will be staffed with associates who can help solve problems ranging from financial aid to paying bills.
The week of April 1, school officials will host an open house for the center's prototype in Edwards Center, though it will be housed in the University Pavilion when it opens this fall.
Though the center will not be ready for spring quarter registration, the week of April 1 is usually a heavy billing period. Since students are still dropping and adding classes, those who need help then will be able to go to one place to get it.
Two features the university plans to add in the next six months are the abilities to make payments online and to have refunds and loans directly deposited.
Last month, a feature called My Advisor was added.
Now, instead of heading to a professor's office, students can send an e-mail to receive academic advice, career counseling and information on psychological services.
Stanley Henderson, associate vice president for enrollment, said two-year colleges have been working toward the one-stop concept for several years.
But we are one of the very first four-year, public, research kinds of institutions to have it, he said. Almost everybody is talking about going in that direction. We know we are on the leading edge.
