Flyers stop Bruins, 4-1
By The Associated Press
BOSTON Jiri Dopita scored twice and Brian Boucher stopped 21 shots on Monday night as the Philadelphia Flyers rallied to beat the Boston Bruins 4-1 in a matchup of the top two teams in the Eastern Conference.
Boucher earned his first win after three consecutive losses. The only goal he allowed was on Bill Guerin's shot that deflected off a defender's skate.
Simon Gagne and Marty Murray also scored for Philadelphia, which with 81 points solidified its lead over Boston (76).
Byron Dafoe stopped 26 shots for Boston, winless in four games since the Olympic break.
Oilers 3, Sabres 0
BUFFALO, N.Y. Rookie Jussi Markkanen stopped 25 shots and Todd Marchant scored twice, leading Edmonton over Buffalo.
Mike Comrie also scored for the Oilers, who moved into a three-way tie for eighth place with Phoenix and Vancouver in the Western Conference. The Oilers also won their second straight road game since snapping a franchise-record 0-7-4 streak away from home.
The Sabres had a four-game home unbeaten string (3-0-1) snapped, and have gone 0-5-1 in their last six meetings against the Oilers, dating to March 27, 1998.
Flames 5, Rangers 3
NEW YORK Jarome Iginla scored three goals and had an assist to boost his NHL-best points total to 72 as Calgary beat the New York Rangers.
It was Iginla's first NHL hat trick, and it came on three consecutive goals in front of a large group of Calgary fans in the upper deck.
Craig Conroy scored his 20th goal and added two assists, and Marc Savard had three assists. Both are Iginla's linemates.
Chris Clark also scored for the Flames.
Radek Dvorak, Manny Malhotra and Michal Grosek scored for the Rangers, who went 1-3 on a four-game homestand.
Penguins 4, Islanders 2
UNIONDALE, N.Y. Alexei Kovalev's power-play goal 24 seconds into the third period capped a comeback as Pittsburgh rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat the New York Islanders.
The Penguins won for just the second time in 11 games (2-6-1-2).
Darius Kasparaitis was credited with his second goal with 59.2 seconds left as Islanders forward Michael Peca's pass back to the point went into New York's empty net.
Kovalev also had an assist, and Jan Hrdina and Janne Laukkanen had a goal and assist each for Pittsburgh, which scored three power-play goals.
Alexei Yashin scored twice for the Islanders, who had a four-game unbeaten streak at home snapped.
Canadiens 5, Thrashers 3
MONTREAL Oleg Petrov scored a short-handed goal with 1:35 left as Montreal recovered from blowing a three-goal lead to defeat Atlanta.
Gino Odjick, Joe Juneau and Yanic Perreault scored first-period goals for the Canadiens. Andreas Dackell scored into an empty net with 2.7 seconds remaining.
After falling behind 3-0 just 9:11 in, Atlanta scored twice in the second. Patrik Stefan scored 4:04 into the third to tie it, just 21 seconds after Montreal's Mike Ribeiro failed on a penalty shot.
Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and assisted on Chris Tamer's score in the second for the Thrashers.
Maple Leafs 3, Capitals 2
WASHINGTON Robert Reichel's third-period goal capped Toronto's comeback from a two-goal deficit against Washington.
The Maple Leafs moved into a tie with Boston atop the Northeast Division.
Corey Schwab (5-6-1) made 27 saves and evened his record at 1-1-1 since taking over for injured starter Curtis Joseph.
The Capitals dropped to 5-2-1 in their past eight games. Sergei Gonchar and Jarmir Jagr scored for Washington. Jagr has goals in four straight games.
Toronto rookie Paul Healey scored his first NHL goal, and Bryan McCabe also had a goal.
Senators 1, Kings 1
LOS ANGELES Craig Johnson tied it with 67 seconds left in the second period, and Los Angeles held Ottawa, the highest-scoring team in the Eastern Conference, to 10 shots over the first two periods.
Wade Redden scored for the Senators, who squandered a chance to tie Boston and Toronto for first place in the Northeast Division. They trail the Bruins and Maple Leafs by one point.
It was the first meeting between the teams since Dec. 20 at Ottawa, when they combined for 252 penalty minutes and six ejections including Kings goaltender Felix Potvin and Senators backup goalie Jani Hurme during a second-period melee that resulted in 174 minutes.
Both teams stuck to hockey in the rematch, with playoff seeding and in the Kings' case, a postseason berth at stake. Mathieu Schneider and Ottawa's Marian Hossa received coincidental roughing penalties at 4:23 of the first period, but that was the extent of it.
Avalanche 2, Devils 0
DENVER Patrick Roy stopped 23 shots for his 60th career shutout, and Joe Sakic had a goal and an assist to lead Colorado over New Jersey.
Roy's shutout broke a tie with Detroit's Dominik Hasek for the career lead among active goalies. It was also Roy's eighth shutout this season, a career high.
Greg de Vries added his career-best seventh goal of the season for the Avalanche, who completed a two-game sweep of New Jersey, the team they beat in last year's Stanley Cup finals.
Martin Brodeur had 18 saves for New Jersey, which had its two-game winning streak snapped.
