NETS:
Kenyon Martin was suspended for one game by the NBA after being called for his sixth flagrant foul of the season.
Six flagrants mean an automatic one-game suspension. The former UC star will miss tonight's road game against the Los Angeles Lakers. Martin, the team's second-leading scorer, lowered his shoulder as he tried to run through a pick set by Chicago rookie center Eddy Curry in the third quarter of Sunday's 92-84 victory over the Bulls.
Martin said he reacted to two hard elbows from Curry that came after four emphatic slam dunks by the New Jersey forward in the third quarter.
I got elbowed twice and no one saw that, said Martin, who also got a technical foul later in the game. What was I supposed to do? I said something to the officials the first time it happened. But nothing happened.
Martin, the No.1 overall pick in the NBA draft two years ago, has been suspended twice for a total of three games this season.
Former NBA star Jayson Williams offered heartfelt condolences to the family of a limousine driver who he is accused of killing with a shotgun blast at his rural estate. The former Net spoke briefly before leaving the Hunterdon County courthouse in Flemington, N.J., where he appeared for a five-minute hearing on the case. Williams is charged with second-degree manslaughter in the Feb.14 shooting death of Costas Christofi.
Me and my wife would like to send out our heartfelt condolences to Mr. Christofi's family, Williams said. He declined to comment on the case, saying his lawyer advised him not to. Williams, 34, did not enter a plea. He is not required to do so until a grand jury hands down an indictment.
BLAZERS:
Shawn Kemp was reinstated by the NBA after serving a five-game suspension for violating the league's anti-drug agreement. Kemp, who was suspended indefinitely Feb.22, was ruled eligible to play for the Trail Blazers Monday against Sacramento. Portland activated Kemp from the suspended list before the game.
