Funds needed to send body
By Jane Prendergast
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Mexican man killed in a drive-by shooting last week in Mount Auburn will be eulogized Friday, but his friends and family still need thousands of dollars to send his body home.
They're not sure exactly how much money they'll need. Among the variables is how much Ricardo Rangel-Tapia's body weighs in his casket, which will be weighed at the airport just before the flight.
They'd also like to send someone with the casket that ticket's estimated cost is $1,000. The estimated cost for local arrangements is $3,500, said Teresita Lewis, office manager at Su Casa Hispanic Ministry in Carthage.
It takes a lot of paperwork and a lot of money, she said.
The 23-year-old Norwood man died early Feb. 26. The hotel cook from Mexico had just left Latin Night at the Mad Frog in Mount Auburn with friends when someone in a vehicle next to them fired into their car.
Friends of Mr. Rangel-Tapia say the suspects yelled, (expletive) Mexicans! before the shot.
Mayor Charlie Luken met Monday with Su Casa Director Sister Margarita Brewer and talked about problems Hispanic people face in Cincinnati.
Visitation for Mr. Rangel-Tapia will be noon until 1 p.m. Friday at St. Charles Church, 115 W. Seymour Ave., Carthage. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 1 p.m.
Donations can be sent to Su Casa Hispanic Ministry at 7036 Fairpark, Cincinnati, 45216.
