Coles eyes 200th career win today

RedHawks face Ball State in MAC quarters

By Gary Estwick
The Cincinnati Enquirer

A Miami University win today in the Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinals not only will advance MU to the semifinals but will give coach Charlie Coles his 200th career win.

Seventh-seeded Miami (13-17) will face No.2 Ball State (19-10) at Gund Arena in Cleveland at 7 p.m.

Also on the line is Coles' MAC title game streak. In his six years at Miami, Coles' teams have reached the tournament final every year.

“If this was a regular-season game, I'd be a little more excited,” Coles said. “But right now I'm thinking about winning the tournament.”

The semifinals are Friday and the championship is Saturday.

Reaching the final this year will be a challenge. The RedHawks split with Ball State in the regular season. Miami won 80-77 in Oxford on Jan.26 but lost 74-58 in Muncie, Ind., Feb.23.

Miami backed into the conference tournament after losing five of its last six regular-season games.

Sophomore guards Juby Johnson and Chester Mason scored 15 points each to lead Miami to a 71-60 victory over Buffalo in the first round Monday.

Ball State had a first-round bye.
