I-275 exit gets a new number
The Cincinnati Enquirer
COVINGTON The Interstate 275 interchange in Northern Kentucky formerly known as exit 7 has taken on its new identity exit 8.
The Kentucky Department of Highways announced the change Thursday. The change is designed to keep drivers, especially truckers, from confusing that exit in Kentucky with exit 7 on I-74 in Ohio.
For a stretch in Ohio, the two interstates run concurrently and some truckers have mistaken the Kentucky exit 7 for Ohio exit 7, resulting in increased truck traffic on Ky. 237, said Bill Madden, transportation engineer branch manager for the Kentucky Department of Highways.
We had trucks turning around on people's yards. Truckers were getting caught down there with no way out, Mr. Madden said.
The department became aware of the problem through public hearings on the proposed widening of Ky. 237.
The names and numbers of the exits before and after exit 8 will remain the same, Mr. Madden said, as exit numbers are keyed to mile-marker numbers. To make the switch, the highway department just altered the number on the existing sign.
The I-275 exit 8 interchange, which is in Hebron in northwestern Boone County, allows access to new residential subdivisions, the crossroads town of Francisville, the Levi-Strauss distribution center and the Park West industrial center.
The interchange is listed as exit 8 on the 2002 official state highway map, which is now available; and the Department of Highways is notifying AAA of the change, Mr. Madden said.
I-275's exit 7 and I-74's exit 7 were at least 20 miles apart.
