WEST CHESTER TWP. — A veterans group will lead the fund raising to transform the former Voice of America building into a museum.

The historical importance of the old VOA Bethany Relay Station on Tylersville Road prompted Fred Carroll, commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7696 in West Chester, to assume the challenge of raising private money.

Butler County commissioners endorsed the project Thursday after Mr. Carroll and Catherine Stoker, a township trustee and a member of the VFW post's Ladies' Auxiliary, spoke to them.

“This is something that needs to be recognized,” Commissioner Mike Fox said.

Commissioners will send letters asking Butler County's Ohio and U.S. lawmakers to endorse the project. Mr. Carroll said he thinks the project can be funded with private money. There is no cost estimate yet.

The VOA station began relaying transmission of news and entertainment around the world in 1944. It closed in 1994.

West Chester Township owns the VOA building and grounds.

Donations can be sent to the Veterans VOA Fund, P.O. Box 815, Middletown, OH 45042-0815.
