Magazine ranks city 37th for women's interests

By Shauna Scott Rhone, srhone@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Cincinnati is among the 50 best places for women to live in America, unless she's an unemployed single female.

Ladies' Home Journal magazine's “Best of America” April issue features its fifth annual “Best Cities for Women” report, placing Cincinnati 37th out of 200 cities.

        Here's how we rate:

        • Near best with child-care options (No. 14).

        • Near worst with dating (No. 175).

        • High as a spiritual center (No. 65)

        • Low (No. 154) in the overall lifestyle category.

        • Midrange as a healthy city (No. 82), educational options (No. 92) personal beauty (No. 130) and least stressful (No. 136, the only rating given in reverse).

According to the report, Cincinnati's a mixed bag on the economic front. While standing at 89th for future job growth, we skidded to 141 for a thriving economy. The worst ranking was 191st in the jobs category, where the magazine considered the number of women managers and professionals, female-owned businesses and the salary gap between men and women.

While most of the cities ranked had a population of 300,000 or more, 10 citieswith less than 300,000 were given honorable mention.

Just for the record, here are the top 10 major cities and top 10 smaller cities (in order) as selected by Ladies' Home Journal magazine:

Big cities: Virginia Beach,Va.; Boston; Honolulu; Austin, Texas; Arlington, Texas; Anaheim,Calif.; Minneapolis; Colorado Springs; San Diego; Omaha,Neb.

Small cities: Madison,Wis.; Alexandria,Va.; Ann Arbor, Mich.; Stamford, Conn.; Irvine, Calif.; Burlington, Vt.; Huntington Beach, Calif.; Santa Clarita, Calif.; Plano, Texas; Thousand Oaks, Calif.

The April issue of Ladies' Home Journal hits stands Tuesday. The complete report is available online at www.lhj.com.
