Cottrell leads NKU women to semis

Norse 1 win from reaching Elite Eight

Enquirer wire services

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Michelle Cottrell scored 21 points Friday night as Northern Kentucky University defeated Lake Superior State 71-62 in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Tournament.

NKU, ranked No.10 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, improved to 25-6 and advanced to tonight's 8:30 p.m. regional championship against top-seeded Southern Indiana. The winner of tonight's game will advance to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight at Rochester, Minn.

Cottrell (Boone County HS) scored 12 points in the first half as NKU built a 32-21 lead at the break. The Norse also held the Lakers to just 33.3 percent shooting from the field during the first half.

NKU opened up a 17-point lead early in the second half by making four 3-point shots in the first five minutes. Bridget Flanagan (Mercy) connected on three 3-pointers during the NKU run and finished with 16 points.

“Cottrell did the work inside, but Bridget Flanagan made some big shots from the outside to begin the second half,” NKU head coach Nancy Winstel said.

NKU is now 1-2 all-time against Lake Superior State during the NCAA Tournament.
