Trial begins in UK player slaying
Opening arguments expected today in '94 DiGiuro case
By Associated Press
LEXINGTON, Ky. Opening arguments were expected to begin today in the trial of a Frankfort man accused in the sniper-style killing of a University of Kentucky football player.
Attorneys screened more than 100 potential jurors Monday in the trial of Shane Ragland, a former UK student who police believe gunned down Trent DiGiuro as he celebrated his 21st birthday on the front porch of his Lexington home July 17, 1994.
Attorneys questioned prospective jurors for nearly seven hours Monday before Fayette Circuit Judge Thomas Clark recessed for the day.
Mr. DiGiuro's murder stumped police for more than half a decade. But in January 2000, Mr. Ragland's ex-girlfriend, Aimee Lloyd, told investigators he had admitted to her in 1995 that he had committed the crime.
Mr. Ragland was arrested after searches at the homes of his father and mother in July 2000. Those searches turned up bullets and a .243-caliber Weatherby hunting rifle similar to the one that killed Mr. DiGiuro.
Prosecutors contend that Mr. Ragland, 28, gunned down Mr. DiGiuro in retaliation for helping to get him blackballed from the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity in 1991.
The trial, which has been delayed several times as defense attorneys tried to get evidence and testimony declared inadmissible, is expected to last about three weeks.
