Comics perform for pantry
Several comedians will use their jokes to raise money for the Love Sharing Community Service Organization in South Fairmount, which was robbed on March 4.
The benefit will begin at 7 p.m. March 24 at the Greenwich Tavern, 2440 Gilbert Ave., Walnut Hills.
Comedian Tye Mazzio, who grew up in the area, said they want to help the place to continue serving families in the South Fairmount area.
This is terrible for someone to rob a pantry that is helping poor people, Mr. Mazzio said. I grew up in Westwood and I know at times our father had to take us to a pantry.
Paul Grayson, president of Love Sharing, said two masked men walked in as it was closing at 3 p.m.
They stormed in waving guns and demanded money. They took about $100 of the pantry money and then took money from one worker, Mr. Grayson said.
Mr. Grayson said he was in the back of the pantry when the robbery took place.
When I came from the back I saw them running out the door, he said.
He said the pantry has operated in the South Fairmount area for 15 years. Aside from giving away food, the pantry has an outlet that offers clothing for needy families at a reduced price.
We serve about 300 families a month, Mr. Grayson said.
Comedian Jaboree (real name Michael Shuemake) also will participate in the benefit.
There are a lot of hungry people out there that depend on the pantry, Jaboree said. I feel it is important to bring something back to the community. I am not that crazy about Cincinnati in light of all the stuff that is going on, but you have to reach out and help people in need.
Comedian Jay Murray and singer Delisa Williams also will perform.
A $10 donation will be collected at the door.
Bearcat basketball fans are celebrating the team by helping teens and adults with disabilities with a raffle for a trip to the Final Four.
The winner will receive airfare, accommodations and tickets for two to the Final Four in Atlanta, Ga.
The Final Four Flyaway event will be sponsored by the Starfire Council at 7 p.m., Friday at the Cintas Center at Xavier University. The winner will be announced immediately after the UC game against Boston University.
Starfire Council is a non-profit that serves more than 400 teens and adults with disabilities through social and service outings. Corporate sponsors are Graydon Head & Ritchey and Fifth Third Bank.
Aside from a chance to win the trip, there will be a dinner, open bar, and a chance to win $10,000 by making a half-court shot. Tickets are $55 in advance and $60 at the door. For more information call 281-2100.
