Oates assists new team in Philly

By The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA — John LeClair scored on a rebound of a shot by newly acquired Adam Oates at 12:26 of the third period as the Philadelphia Flyers snapped a five game winless streak with a 2-1 victory over the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim on Thursday night.

Oates, acquired from Washington for goaltender Maxime Ouellet and three draft picks on Tuesday, picked up his NHL-leading 58th assist on the play.

Anaheim's Jeff Friesen and Philadelphia's Simon Gagne traded unassisted goals as the Flyers also snapped a five game winless streak at home (0-4-1).

        Rangers 5, Senators 2

OTTAWA — Newcomers Pavel Bure and Tom Poti each scored as New York ended a four-game losing streak with a win over Ottawa.

Bure, acquired from Florida on Monday, assisted on Eric Lindros' goal 6:00 in before scoring his 24th of the season at 12:31 in his second game with New York. Bure now has three points as a Ranger after scoring in his New York debut on Tuesday.

Rem Murray, acquired with Poti from Edmonton on Tuesday, had an assist as New York drew to within two points of Montreal for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Sandy McCarthy and Theo Fleury also scored for New York.

Shane Hnidy and Marian Hossa scored for Ottawa.

Red Wings 3, Blue Jackets 2, OT

COLUMBUS, Ohio — With tears, silence and eventually cheers, Columbus hockey fans paid their respects to the 13-year-old girl who died after being hit by a puck.

Brittanie Cecil died Monday, two days after being struck by a puck during Columbus' game against Calgary. The eighth-grader from suburban Dayton was remembered with a moment of silence before the start of Thursday night's game against Detroit.

Sergei Fedorov's wraparound goal 25 seconds into overtime was the winner.

        Islanders 3, Canucks 2

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Chris Osgood stopped Markus Naslund's penalty shot and finished with 36 saves to lead New York past Vancouver, ending the Canucks' five-game winning streak.

Mariusz Czerkawski and Brad Isbister each had a goal and assist for New York, which is tied with New Jersey for sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 77 points. The Islanders have a game in hand.

Alexei Yashin also scored for New York.

Naslund and Todd Bertuzzi scored for Vancouver.

        Hurricanes 3, Panthers 2

RALEIGH, N.C. — Martin Gelinas and Ron Francis scored in the third period as Carolina rallied past Florida.

Goalkeeper Kevin Weekes made his first start for the Hurricanes since coming from Tampa Bay in a trade on March 5. He allowed two goals on the first two shots he faced, but then didn't allow another.

Sandis Ozolinsh and Jason Wiemer scored for Carolina.

        Bruins 2, Sabres 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Rookie Nick Boynton had a goal and assist, recording his first multipoint game, to lead Boston over Buffalo.

Sergei Samsonov also scored, while Byron Dafoe stopped 25 shots, including 16 in the final 20 minutes, for the Eastern Conference-leading Bruins.

Maxim Afinogenov scored for the Sabres.

        Capitals 4, Maple Leafs 3

TORONTO — Jaromir Jagr scored two goals and had two assists as Washington beat Toronto.

Gary Roberts scored twice for Toronto, which also got a goal from Robert Reichel.

Danius Zubrus scored the game-winner — his second goal of the game — with 3:05 remaining.

        Kings 3, Avalanche 1

LOS ANGELES — Philippe Boucher and Jason Allison scored power-play goals and rookie Jaroslav Bednar beat Patrick Roy with a slap shot from behind the blue line as the Los Angeles Kings beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-1 Thursday night.

        Radim Vrbata scored for Colorado.

        Sharks 4, Flames 1

CALGARY, Alberta — Owen Nolan scored once and Vincent Damphousse contributed three assists as San Jose beat Calgary to end a three-game winless skid.

Brad Stuart, Adam Graves and Scott Thornton also scored for San Jose.

Jeff Shantz scored the lone goal for Calgary, which is winless in its last seven (0-5-2).

        Devils 4, Predators 3

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Sergei Brylin scored two goals, one on the power play, as New Jersey beat Nashville.

Newcomers Jamie Langenbrunner and Joe Nieuwendyk also scored, tallying their first points as Devils since being traded from Dallas on Tuesday.

Nashville scored three third-period goals, including two by Greg Johnson, but the Predators continued their season-long losing streak with their sixth straight loss.

Kimmo Timonen had the other goal for Nashville.
