500th for Shanahan

The Associated Press

DENVER — Brendan Shanahan scored his 500th career goal, breaking a scoreless tie at 7:48 of the third period as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Colorado Avalanche 2-0 Saturday in the NHL.

Dominik Hasek had 31 saves for his 61st career shutout, tops among active goalies.

Shanahan beat Patrick Roy from the left circle on a 5-on-3 advantage. He had gone eight straight games without a goal in pursuit of No. 500, a milestone that already has been reached by teammates Brett Hull, Steve Yzerman and Luc Robitaille.

In one of the NHL's top rivalries pitting the league's two best records, a fight erupted two minutes after Shanahan's goal.

        • Kings 3, Sharks 0, at Los Angeles — Ziggy Palffy scored two power-play goals and Felix Potvin had his 23rd career shutout as Los Angeles beat San Jose for its sixth straight victory, tying the Sharks for first place in the Pacific Division.

        • Hurricanes 4, Devils 2, at East Rutherford, N.J.— Defenseman Sean Hill scored with 4:15 left and Carolina playing with two extra men. Jeff O'Neill added an empty-net goal.

        • Flyers 4, Penguins 4, at Pittsburgh — Alexei Kovalev scored twice in the third period and Pittsburgh, trying to keep alive its flickering playoff hopes, rallied to tie Philadelphia. The Pens rallied from two goals down.

        • Islanders 2, Wild 1, at Uniondale, N.Y. — Mark Parrish scored his 28th goal of the season with 4:07 left to help New York take sole possession of sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

        • Thrashers 3, Senators 2, OT, at Ottawa — Dany Heatley scored at 1:41 of overtime and Frederic Cassivi made 50 saves in just his second NHL start.

        • Capitals 5, Blue Jackets 2, at Columbus — Ulf Dahlen scored his second goal and Jaromir Jagr added another 18 seconds later in the third period as the Capss won their third straight.

        • Leafs 2, Sabres 0, at Toronto — Corey Schwab made 20 saves for his first shutout of the season.

        • Bruins 3, Panthers 1, at Sunrise, Fla. — Mike Knuble scored the go-ahead goal and Glen Murray added an empty-netter.

        • Predators 5, Canadiens 1, at Nashville, Tenn. — Jukka Hentunen made the most of his debut for the Nashville Predators with a goal and an assist.
