Lady Monarchs roll to regional final

The Associated Press

MILWAUKEE — Old Dominion, which was angered by its seventh seed, continued its efforts to prove the NCAA wrong.

Powered by 30 points from Lucienne Berthieu, the Lady Monarchs rolled over third-seeded Kansas State 88-62 Saturday in a Mideast Regional semifinal. They have won 21 straight games going into Monday night's showdown with Connecticut.

“We're in a position now to ruin parties, and that's a great place to be,” Old Dominion coach Wendy Larry said. “When you're in that position, you can be more relaxed.”

Berthieu dominated the low post, shooting 13-of-18 and grabbing eight rebounds while at times being triple-teamed.

“She got the best of me pretty much all game,” said Kansas State center Nicole Ohlde, who scored 23 points.

        West Regional
        Colorado 62, Stanford 59

BOISE, Idaho — Tera Bjorkland scored 10 of her 17 points in the second half and Randi Wirt made two free throws with eight seconds remaining as the third-seeded Buffaloes advanced.

The victory by Colorado (24-9) ensures the Big 12 of a team in the Final Four for the first time. The Buffaloes play the winner of Saturday's late game between Oklahoma and Texas Tech.

Eisha Bohman scored 10 points for the Buffaloes and helped slow Cardinal star Nicole Powell, who had triple-doubles in Stanford's first two tournament games but had 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists Saturday.

Stanford (32-3) had a chance to force overtime but Lindsey Yamasaki, who led the Cardinal with 14 points, missed a 3-point attempt as the horn sounded.

        East Regional
        Duke 62, Texas 46

RALEIGH, N.C. — Alana Beard scored 15 points, and Sheana Mosch added 13 to help the Blue Devils win their school-record 21st straight game.

Top-seeded Duke (30-3) advanced to Monday's East Regional final against third-seeded South Carolina. The Blue Devils won despite scoring 23 points below their season average.

Fourth-seeded Texas (22-10) was looking for its first trip to a regional final since 1990. But the Longhorns couldn't overcome a 16-point first-half deficit.

Texas crept back into the game in the second half, going on an 11-2 run to pull within 38-35 on an inside score by Heather Schreiber with 8:50 to play. But Duke answered with a 16-4 run over the next four minutes, keyed by a jumper and two free throws from Mosch, followed by an inside score and a 3-pointer from Iciss Tillis.

Duke pushed the lead to 54-39 on Beard's layup with 4:43 to play and remained in control the rest of the way.

Stacy Stephens had 14 points for Texas.

        South Carolina 79, Drake 65

RALEIGH, N.C. — Shaunzinski Gortman and Jocelyn Penn each had 19 points as third-seeded South Carolina advanced.

The Gamecocks (25-6) earned their first trip to a regional final.

Trailing 51-33 early in the second half, Drake (25-8) could cut the deficit to no more than 10.

Carla Bennett scored 20 points to lead Drake.

        Midwest Regional
        Tennessee 68, BYU 57

AMES, Iowa — Freshman Shyra Ely scored the first 12 points of a game-turning 15-0 run late in the first half for the second-seeded Lady Vols, who advanced to a regional final for the 17th time in 21 years. The run erased a nine-point deficit and sent Tennessee to a 35-29 lead.

Tennessee (28-4) will play Vanderbilt Monday.

BYU (24-9) was trying to become the first No.11 seed to reach the regional finals. Melanie Pearson scored 23 points for the Cougars.

        Vanderbilt 70, North Carolina 61

AMES, Iowa — Chantelle Anderson had 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead the top-seeded Commodores (30-6), who held on after losing most of their 13-point halftime lead.

Fourth-seeded North Carolina (26-9) fell well below its 80.5 scoring average. Coretta Brown scored 19 points for North Carolina, but Nikki Teasley finished with only three on 1-for-14 shooting.
