OXFORD The city known for serving green beer in honor of St. Patrick's Day is promoting an alternative: green tea.
City Council has proclaimed March 27 as Green Tea Day to encourage all students and citizens to celebrate longevity and healthy lifestyles, Mayor Kenneth H. Bogard said.
Recent scientific studies have shown the therapeutic effects of green tea. Miami University's Scripps Gerontology Center recommended that council recognize the tea with its own day.
The residents of Oxford will be able to enjoy enriching experiences that explore the diverse means of developing healthy lifestyles, said Buffy Hanna, special projects coordinator for the Gerontology Center.
Throughout Oxford, residents will serve green tea, demonstrate the arts of pottery and origami, and present health lectures and workshops. Groups will provide blood pressure checks, respiratory screenings and massage therapy, and discuss the benefits of exercise and good nutrition.
Free green tea packets will be distributed, and more than 40 campus and community organizations will be involved. A Japanese tea ceremony will be held at the tea day center, Shriver Center.
