Recreation Notes


Hikers go birding

        MIAMI TOWNSHIP — The Hamilton County Park District will present “Birding at Mitchell” at 9 a.m. April 7 at Mitchell Memorial Forest on Zion Road.

        Participants will hike the Wood Duck Trail.

Adult volleyball

        Registrations are being taken for Cincinnati Recreation Commission adult spring volleyball teams.

        There are leagues for six-player men's, women's and co-rec teams. Each league plays a five-game season.

Benefit run

        SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP — The “Be a WINner at Heart XIX 5K Run and Walk” takes place at 9 a.m. April 6 at Winton Woods on Winton Road.

        The race begins at Kestrel Point. Proceeds benefit Working in Neighborhoods, a nonprofit agency.

Slow-pitch contest

        HEBRON — Entries are being accepted for the Miller Lite slow-pitch softball tournament April 6-7 at Rivershore Sports Complex on Ky. 8.

        The tournament is a qualifier for U.S. Slow-pitch Softball Association Class C and D teams. Cost is $160 per team.

April run-walk

        Registrations are being taken for the Gore-Tex 5K Run and Walk at 9 a.m. April 13 at Coney Island on Kellogg Avenue.

        Proceeds benefit Children's Hospital Medical Center.

        Cost is $9, or $18 with a T-shirt for entries mailed by April 7 or sent online by April 10. Race day registration is $12 ($22 with shirt.)

Soccer meeting

        A Southwest Ohio Soccer Officials Association meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Nathanael Green Lodge at Veterans Park, 6394 Wesselman Road, Green Township.

Pitcher tryouts

        A select baseball team for 13-year-olds from eastern Hamilton County has openings for three pitchers. Tryouts are by appointment. There is no player fee.

Karate class

        SHARONVILLE — A Parks and Recreation Department karate class meets 6-8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the Sharonville Community Center, 10990 Thornview Drive.

        A new session begins every month. Cost is $35 for Sharonville residents and $38 for nonresidents.

Preteen nights

        FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield YMCA, 5220 Bibury Road, holds “Preteen Night” 8-10 p.m. Fridays through May 10. Activities are for ages 8-12. Cost is $6 per child.

Learn scuba

        OXFORD — A three-day scuba course will be conducted April 12-14 at the Miami University Recreational Sports Center, 700 S. Oak St.

        The schedule is 6-8 p.m. April 12, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 13 and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 14. Cost is $260 for center members and $270 for nonmembers.

Softball signups

        LEBANON — Signups are under way for Lebanon Parks and Recreation summer softball leagues.

        There are openings for men's, women's and coed recreational and competitive teams. The season begins April 22.

Build strength

        HAMILTON — Registrations are being taken for the Hamilton Central YMCA's High Output Training classes.

        The sessions will be held at the Y, 105 N. Second St. They are designed to help athletes increase speed, strength and agility.

Field dedication

        HAMILTON — The new Foundation Field will dedicated at 4 p.m. April 2 at Booker T. Washington Community Center, Knightsbridge Drive and Front Street.

        After the ceremony will be a baseball game between Miami-Middletown and Miami-Hamilton. Information: 785-7060.

Manage stress

        FAIRFIELD — A free basic yoga and stress-management class will be held from 7-8:15 p.m. April 5 at Fairfield Community Center, 2200 John Gray Road.

Tennis for tykes

        OXFORD — Registrations are being taken for Oxford Parks and Recreation Department Pee Wee tennis lessons.

        The lessons are for children ages 4-6. They are conducted from noon 12:50 p.m. Saturdays from April 27 to May 25 at TRI Community Center, 6025 Fairfield Road.

        Cost is $30 for families who live or work in Oxford and $32 for nonresidents. A maximum of 12 spots are available.

Mason open gym

        MASON — Men's basketball open gym is available for adults through April 29.

        There are two times: 9-10:30 p.m. Mondays at Mason Heights Elementary School, 200 Northcrest Drive, for players ages 18-34; and 9-10:30 p.m. Wednesdays at Western Row Elementary School, 755 Western Row Road, for players 35 and older.
