Woman accused of faking robbery
FAIRFIELD A report this month that gunmen wearing surgical masks had robbed a Fairfield doctor's assistant was not true, police said Monday.
A woman who worked at the medical office is facing charges of petty theft and making false alarms, both misdemeanors. Sherry L. Pope, 26, of Hamilton is accused of taking $50 from the cash drawer of Dr. Bharati Narasimhan's office at 1251 Nilles Road and then staging a robbery.
Ms. Pope is scheduled to appear in Fairfield Municipal Court on Wednesday.
Police were called to the doctor's office the morning of March 4 after a co-worker arrived for work to find Ms. Pope lying on the floor. Ms. Pope said she had been robbed at gunpoint.
But after a three-week investigation, authorities said Ms. Pope had taken $50 from the office on March 1.
We take these things very seriously and all our available officers responded on this call, Fairfield Police Lt. Ken Colburn said. We've had other false reports, but usually not with such detail.
Ms. Pope's employment at the doctor's office has been terminated, Lt. Colburn said. A woman who answered the phone at the office on Monday said the doctor had no comment.
