Security ramped up for Derby

Curbs on carry-in items

The Associated Press

LOUISVILLE — The fabled Kentucky Derby Infield party atmosphere will be cranked down a notch as security for the Triple Crown jewel is increased after Sept. 11.

BANNED ITEMS
Churchill Downs officials on Tuesday announced restrictions on items fans will be able to bring into the Kentucky Oaks on May 3 and the Kentucky Derby on May 4.
Banned items
    • Weapons, knives and scissors.
    • Bottles and cans, including all beverage and lotion containers.
    • Thermoses, coolers and grills.
    • Backpacks, luggage and duffel bags.
    • Strollers and wagons.
    • Umbrellas.
    • Trash bags.
Permitted items
    • Food in clear bags.
    • Cell phones and cameras.
    • Binoculars.
    • Purses and baby bags.
    • Chairs (Gate 3 only).
    • Blankets and tarpaulins (Gates 1 and 3 only).
Churchill Downs officials and law enforcement officials on Tuesday announced plans for tighter security for this year's Kentucky Derby.

Fans attending the May 4 event will be screened with a magnetic wand at the gate and will have heightened restrictions on what they can bring to the track.

Alcohol and most food containers will not be permitted, even on the infield, where thousands set up makeshift picnic areas, track officials said.

The track will reduce prices on food and beverages on the day of the races, officials said.

An increased number of Louisville and Jefferson County police officers will be joined by members of the FBI, Secret Service, the Kentucky National Guard and other agencies to watch the gates and observe the areas around the track.

Concrete barricades will be set up as far as 75 feet outside gates where vehicles can enter. Every vehicle will be subject to a search.

“We've put together a plan we think will maximize security, while also welcoming people to our facility in a new way,” said track president Alex Waldrop. “The safety of those attending the event, those working at the event are a top priority for us.”
