SEAMAN, Ohio Six miles of a major route through Adams County was expected to continue to be closed today after a tanker truck crashed and spilled about 2,500 gallons of jet fuel Tuesday.
Ohio 32 was closed between Ohio 247 and Ohio 41, about 80 miles east of Cincinnati, after the accident happened about 7:45 a.m.
The truck driver, Billy McGranahan, 61, of Argillite, Ky., was treated at Adams County Hospital in West Union and released. There were no other injuries or vehicles involved.
The truck, loaded with about 7,500 gallons of jet fuel, was on its way to Charleston, W.Va., from a pumping station in Warren County, Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Eric Weinman said.
The truck is owned by Advantage Tank Lines in Canton, Ohio. Advantage officials could not be reached for comment.
Mr. McGranahan was eastbound on Ohio 32 when the truck crashed and overturned near Seaman.
It looks like he rolled completely over at least once, Scott Township Fire Chief David Wheeler said. We've had semi-truck crashes right here in this same location.
The crash happened at the bottom of a hill near a bridge over the west fork of Ohio Brush Creek. The spilled fuel contaminated soil and the creek, but Ohio Environmental Protection Agency officials could not tell how much fuel made it into the water.
The high, swift-running creek will help flush the fuel in it, said Dennis Deavers, emergency response coordinator for the Ohio EPA. Likewise, recent flooding will help keep fuel from sinking deep into the soil.
EPA officials don't anticipate any major fish kills or environmental problems from the spill.
As big a spill as it is ... it's pretty straightforward, Mr. Deavers said. We're not going to have any long term clean-up.
Mr. McGranahan, who was wearing a seat belt, was cited for failing to maintain control.
