UK urged to split college
The Associated Press
LEXINGTON A panel wants to divide the University of Kentucky's College of Arts and Sciences into three parts, saying the split is crucial to the school's future academic stature.
The Committee on UK's Future has released its final report, which urges President Lee Todd to split the College of Arts and Sciences into three new colleges: science and mathematics, arts and letters, and social and behavioral sciences.
The report read, The voices of the physical scientists and mathematicians, the social scientists and the humanists are all weaker than they should be at a major research institution if they are to propel either the basic or applied areas of research on campus to higher levels of achievement.
That recommendation caused the most discussion on campus when a preliminary report was released Feb. 22.
Michael Kennedy, an incoming faculty member of the Board of Trustees, sent surveys to 176 arts and science faculty members, and 72 percent of them opposed the split.
Pat Cooper, a professor of history and women's studies, said the division would make all three colleges weaker, as well as widen traditional gender divides between science and humanities.
It creates a girls' college and a boys' college, and it reinscribes traditional boundaries that make it less likely that scholars will cross those boundaries.
