Chronology of Evendale's hiring of Stephen Roach
Jan. 3: At monthly meeting, village officials unanimously vote to hire Officer Roach. Only one resident, Pam Harwood, Councilman David Harwood's wife, speaks in opposition.
Jan 4: Officer Roach submits his resignation to Cincinnati police. Evendale officials announce they have hired him.
Jan 6: Some 200 opponents hold a community rally to protest the hiring.
Jan. 8: Village officials begin meeting with residents for discussion sessions about the hiring.
Jan. 15: Mayor Douglas Lohmeier announces he will take no action to prevent Officer Roach from working in the Hamilton County village. He also cancels remaining discussion sessions he had set up with residents.
Jan. 22: Officer Roach arrives for his first day work in Evendale.
Jan. 30: More than 200 signatures are filed with the village clerk for a November referendum to allow voters to decide whether Officer Roach remains on the police force.
Feb. 19: In his first arrest in Evendale, Officer Roach and his training officer nab a suspected bank robber about a half-hour after a Springdale bank is held up. At a press conference, he says: All I want to do is continue to go out there and be a policeman, and be a good policeman.
March 10: In a letter to residents, Mayor Lohmeier says the village has no choice but to follow the laws, so a referendum will not be placed on the ballot.
March 20: A Cincinnati police internal affairs report is released that concludes that Officer Roach violated police policy on the use of his weapon and then lied to investigators about the shooting.
March 21: Councilman Phil Schneider says he has new concerns about the hiring after reading the report and asks Mr. Lohmeier for a special council session. An opponent, Dr. Randy Cox, calls for resignations from the mayor, police chief and council members. Chief Foust says he has read the report and his stance hasn't changed.
March 27: Chief Foust announces he has placed Officer Roach on administrative duties until he can clear his name of the allegations in the internal report.
