Pageant to honor Schott
Marge Schott, former owner of the Cincinnati Reds, will be given a Lifetime Achievement Award during the Miss Cincinnati Pageant at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Hughes Center, 2515 Clifton Ave., University Heights.
Ronn Rucker, executive director of the pageant, said Mrs. Schott was selected for her numerous philanthropic contributions to Cincinnati youth.
I don't think people are aware of the many things she does for youth, Mr. Rucker said. She gave a million dollars to St. Ursula Academy. She often makes contributions to the Boy and Girl Scouts.
A building at St. Ursula Academy was named the Margaret Unnewehr Schott Hall in honor of Mrs. Schott's family.
Mr. Rucker said Mrs. Schott will attend the ceremony, receive the award and assist in helping to crown Miss Cincinnati. She also will present the organization with a $1,000 scholarship.
This is the second time she has given the scholarship, Mr. Rucker said.
He said 15 young women will compete for Miss Cincinnati, the official preliminary to Miss Ohio and Miss America. The judging panel will include ballet star Luciano Lazzarotto and past Cincinnati Woman of the Year Sandra Driggins Smith.
The Miss Ohio contest will be held in June.
Mr. Rucker said the Miss America organization is the largest women's scholarship organization in the world, providing annually more than $30 million to women.
Tickets for $12 will be available at the door.
The work of Antonio Johnson, an African-American student who pioneered social change and justice at Xavier University, will be remembered during a scholarship gala at 6:30 p.m. April 12 at the Cintas Center.
Mr. Johnson, who died at age 22 while a student at Xavier, organized and implemented activities for Black Awareness Month in February 1976.
He died that year. He was majoring in urban studies and had served as president of the Black Student Association (BSA).
The association has presented the Antonio Johnson Scholarship Award every year since 1983.
The $3,000 scholarship award is given to an African-American student at the junior level for academic excellence, leadership, contribution to BSA and community service. The scholarship can be applied to the student's senior year.
Awards also will be given to students, faculty and staff who have had a positive impact on the Xavier community.
Categories are: outstanding freshman, sophomore and senior; outstanding service, faculty and staff support, and BSA Committee of the year.
