Logan, West miss ESPN honors

ATLANTA — Cincinnati's Steve Logan and Xavier's David West, each a finalist for ESPN Magazine awards, came up empty Thursday night at the magazine's annual awards show.

STEVE LOGAN'S HONORS
• Finalist: Wooden Award
• National player of the year: FoxSports.com, CNN/SI, CollegeInsider.com
• First-team All-American: Associated Press, Wooden Award, U.S. Basketball Writers Association, National Association of Basketball Coaches, ESPN.com, Basketball Times
• Conference USA player of the year, tournament MVP

DAVID WEST'S HONORS
• Second-team All-American: AP, Basketball Times, USBWA
• Third-team All-American: NABC
• All-American: CollegeInsider.com
• Atlantic 10 player of the year, defensive player of the year, tournament most valuable player.

Logan was one of three finalists for both player of the year and point guard of the year, but Duke's Jason Williams won both honors. West was one of three finalists for the center of the year award, but that honor went to Duke's Carlos Boozer.

The awards were voted on by the coaches who participate in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll.

        • Hometown favorite Tony Akins of Georgia Tech outshot high-profile participants Logan and Dan Dickau of Gonzaga on Thursday night to win the long-distance portion of the Slam Dunk and Three-Point Champi onships in Atlanta.

Logan (11 points) and Dickau (a competition-low seven points) didn't get past the first round. They were late arrivals from the ESPN award ceremony and barely had time to warm up.

“I was shut out all night,” Logan said. “I didn't pull down any awards at the other thing, either. A complete shutout.”

A big prize - Associated Press player of the year - will be announced at 11 a.m. today.
