Rally set to promote senior levy

Operation Helping the Elderly: The effort to pass a levy for elderly services in Warren County will get a little less quiet this week. A rally is planned for 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Warren County Community Services Building, 570 Ohio 741, Turtlecreek Township.

The public is invited to the event, which will be headlined by Corwin Nixon, a former county commissioner and state representative.

Warren is the only area county without a levy for services to help the elderly stay independent by aiding with bathing and housekeeping, transportation to doctors' offices, adult day care, and hot meals.

The 0.96-mill levy will be on the May 7 ballot. If it passes, it would raise $3.7 million a year and cost the owner of a $100,000 home $29.40 a year.

Does the slipper fit? The hunt for the Republican nomination in the 3rd Congressional District is shaping up as a race to prove who's the most conservative of them all.

Last week, former Dayton Mayor Mike Turner received the endorsement of Ohio Right to Life, although his chief opponent, Brown Publishing CEO Roy Brown, also is anti-abortion. Right to Life cited Mr. Brown's lack of a political track record.

At the same time, Mr. Brown accused Mr. Turner of supporting abortion-rights candidates in the past and challenged him to pledge not to do so in the future.

“This issue is too serious to be ignored by any candidate,” the Brown campaign said in a release.

Still, one has to wonder when we're going to hear about the war on terrorism and the economy — the major issues Washington is grappling with now.

Staying out of the fray are three other 3rd District candidates: Republican Gregory Hunter, Democrat Richard Carne and Libertarian Ronald Williamitis.

Columnist coming: Conservative columnist Cal Thomas visits Ohio tonight to campaign for 3rd District candidate Roy Brown.

Mr. Thomas, whose columns appear in 450 U.S. newspapers, will speak at 6 p.m. at Kettering Middle School's gym, 3000 Glengarry Drive, Kettering.

The event is open to the public, the Brown campaign says. From Warren County, drive north on Ohio 48 to Dorothy Lane. Go right on Dorothy, right on Powhattan and left on Glengarry.

For more information, call Brown headquarters at (937) 290-7200.

The 3rd District has been redrawn to include northern Warren County, Highland and Clinton in addition to part of Montgomery.

Tips and comments on suburban politics may be relayed to reporter Cindi Andrews via phone, 755-4157, or e-mail, candrews@enquirer.com.
