Tulsa prep Azubuike to sign with UK today
Louisville Courier-Journal
Oklahoma prep standout Kelenna Azubuike is expected to sign with Kentucky today after deciding Sunday he wanted to play for the Wildcats next season, his high school coach, Joe Mercier, said.
The NCAA's spring signing period started Wednesday and runs through May10.
The 6-foot-6 Azubuike will join UK recruits Antwain Barbour, Bernard Cote and Brandon Stockton, who signed in November.
Mercier said Azubuike originally planned to visit his final two choices Illinois and UK before announcing his decision April 29. But Chicago native Aaron Spears claimed Illinois' last available scholarship Sunday.
UK would appear to have no scholarships left. The Wildcats' three early signees combined with 10 returning players would put them at the scholarship maximum for men's basketball.
Mercier said Azubuike was not asked to walk on and would receive a scholarship.
Kelenna Azubuike (pronounced Kah-LYNN-ah As-ah-BOO-key) averaged 39.1 points for Tulsa's Victory Christian High, which plays in 4-A in Oklahoma's six classifications.
