Springboro stands by new chief

SPRINGBORO Council continues to support the appointment of the city's new police chief, despite questions about his past, city officials said Thursday.
Jeff Kruithoff, who met with council Tuesday evening in an executive session, is to start his new post Monday and has already purchased a house here, Assistant City Manager Christine Thompson said.
Council will ratify hiring the former Battle Creek, Mich., chief April 18 in an official resolution, she said.
Ms. Thompson characterized the executive session this week as an informal chat.
They just hadn't really seen him very much since his appointment, Ms. Thompson said.
Mr. Kruithoff resigned in Battle Creek on March 20, 2001, less than two weeks after he was placed on administrative leave following allegations he destroyed citizen evaluations of officers who were passed over for promotion.
He also was accused in a federal lawsuit of authorizing an illegal wiretap on a detective, with whose wife Mr. Kruithoff admitted having an affair. The lawsuit was settled last year when the city of Battle Creek paid the detective $65,000.
Mr. Kruithoff has told The Cincinnati Enquirer he knew about the wiretap, but denied authorizing it.
Council members were not aware of the wiretapping allegations when they appointed Mr. Kruithoff, a 28-year police veteran, last month to lead Springboro's 22-member force. The job pays $65,000 a year.
