A pedestrian was struck by a train and killed Saturday night in Woodlawn.
The accident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. at the railroad crossing on Marion Road.
Woodlawn police and fire officials did not immediately report the victim's identity. They described the victim as a man in his mid- to late 20s.
A helicopter responded from University Hospital, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim suffered trauma to the head and chest, said Woodlawn's deputy fire chief, Dan Ficke.
Deputy Chief Ficke said the victim apparently stepped out of a wooded area along Marion Road and onto the railroad tracks just as an eastbound CSX train was going by.
Police were trying to notify relatives late Saturday.
Fire and police departments from Woodlawn and Lincoln Heights responded. All train traffic near the railroad crossing was halted for several hours.
