UK study looks at toll on cancer-patient caregivers
By Steve Bailery

LEXINGTON For years, scientists have analyzed the physical and psychological effects of cancer.
An innovative new study under way at the University of Kentucky's Chandler Medical Center, however, looks at the emotional toll on those charged with caring for someone stricken with cancer.
Much of the focus of cancer research historically has been on the patients themselves, said Dr. William Regine, a radiation oncologist and vice chairman of the school's Department of Radiation Medicine. But as anyone who has been involved with cancer can tell you, the disease creates a huge ripple effect in those around the patient friends, loved ones, children and parents.
Dr. Regine and Joseph Gaugler of the school's Sanders-Brown Center on Aging have teamed up to determine exactly what kinds of tools caregivers might need to combat the stress and overwhelming feelings of helplessness experienced by those who care for cancer patients.
The two have enlisted the help of nearly two dozen caregivers to fill out surveys. They hope eventually to have 200 to 250 volunteers.
