Another Charismatic Lexington for Lukas?
The Cincinnati Enquirer and wire reports
LEXINGTON Trainer D. Wayne Lukas hopes the Lexington Stakes is as good to him today as it was in 1999 the year Charismatic won the race and went on to capture the Kentucky Derby.
Should Lukas' long shot, Proud Citizen, run wellenough in the $325,000 Lexington at Keeneland, he might find himself back in the Derby after his record string of 20 straight starts was snapped last year.
Although he admits the odds are long, Lukas knows better than most that anything is possible. The 1 1/16-mile race at Keeneland is the last call for horses and trainers to show they deserve a trip to the May 4 Derby.
The maximum Derby field is 20, and the determining factor is based on earnings in graded stakes races. The Lexington field was reduced by one when 8-5 favorite Officer, a winner in six of nine career starts, was scratched because of a injury to his left front tendon.
The Lexington field: Mucho Rapido, Proud Citizen, Easyfromthegitgo, American Style, Tails From The Crypt, Ethan Man, One Tuff Fox and Crimson Hero.
