Mickelson fires 64
Lefty ties record for 36 holes at 129

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. Phil Mickelson showed the maddening and marvelous sides of his game Friday, shooting a 7-under 64 to tie Jack Nicklaus' 36-hole scoring record in the WorldCom Classic.
Mickelson, who began the second round five strokes behind Justin Leonard, had a 13-under 129 total to match the mark set by Nicklaus en route to his 1975 victory.
Mickelson opened with bogey on the 10th hole, then got that back with birdies on the 11th and 13th holes. He caught Leonard for the lead at 11 under with an eagle on par-5 second hole.
Lefty he drove into the rough near a tree on the next tee to drop a shot, then recovered with birdies on Nos. 5-6 to move in front for good at Harbour Town Golf Links. He didn't even make birdies the easy way. Mickelson drove into a bunker on purpose in front of the 332-yard ninth hole, his last of the day. He blasted out to the back fringe about 15 feet away and made the putt to reach 13 under.
This is the kind of golf course where you need to be creative, Mickelson said. I love it. I love to be creative. That makes it a fun golf course to play.
Davis Love III, the first-round leader at 62, closed with birdies on the 17th and 18th holes en route to a 69. He was tied at 11-under 131 with Leonard, who shot a 64.
Phil's round was probably equal to the score I shot yesterday with the wind, Love said.
LPGA LONGS DRUGS: Cristie Kerr, seeking her first LPGA Tour victory, shot an even-par 72 in windy conditions to take a two-stroke lead at Lincoln, Calif.
It's nice for a change, being the one that is being chased, instead of having to catch the leaders, said Kerr, in her sixth full season on the tour at age 24.
She had a 6-under 138 total at Twelve Bridges Golf Club.
SEVE TROPHY: Colin Montgomerie rebounded from a morning loss by teaming with Andrew Oldcorn for a win in foursomes, leading Britain and Ireland to a 5-3 lead over Europe.
