Clermont adding water tanks
Nine will be built as population grows

MIAMI TOWNSHIP The first of nine water storage tanks being built over the next 10 to 15 years in the western portion of Clermont County will go into operation in August, Clermont County Water and Sewer District officials say.
The tanks have three primary purposes: To enhance fire protection; provide storage during peak demand; and provide water during power outages, when gravity can compensate for lack of electricity.
You don't want to run a system off a pump if you lose electrical power, said Tom Yeager, operations administrator for the district. People will be out of water. This way you have a gravity supply out of a tank during periods of power outages.
The 200,000-gallon tank being built at Branch Hill-Miamiville Road at Interstate 275 is the smallest of the nine tanks proposed. Another, to hold 2 million gallons is under construction at Buckwheat Road and Ohio 131. That tank is to be completed in late May 2003.
The tanks are being built in response to population growth over the last 10 years. The county has been experiencing tremendous growth over the years, said Mr. Yeager.
Fire Chief James Whitworth said the tanks are welcomed by the fire department.
What we're dealing with is the pressure that growth has put on the water delivery system, said Chief Whitworth. We have seen decreased pressures in some areas. We carry water with us, but we rely on water supply at the street.
The tank on Branch Hill-Miamiville Road is being constructed for about $468,000, said Mr. Yeager. It will serve northern Mi ami Township, in the area west of I-275.
The locations for the other seven tanks are approximate, and public involvement meetings will be held over the next several years before the tanks are constructed.
We want to get the public's input into the process, Mr. Yeager said.
