Employee dies after fall

WEST CHESTER TWP. A veteran worker at a frozen-food manufacturer died Monday after falling about 30 feet from a scaffold onto a concrete floor, according to firefighters.
Rick McCarty, 38, of Hamilton, climbed onto a rack at Pierre Frozen Foods at 9990 Princeton-Glendale Road to retrieve an item about 5:15 a.m., according to po lice reports.
He was taken to Mercy Hospital in Fairfield with massive head trauma and pronounced dead, West Chester Township Fire Chief Jim Detherage said.
It was a very tragic incident, obviously, said George Kellar, vice president of human resources at the meat processing plant that has been at the location for 20 years. Mr. McCarty worked for the company 16 years, Mr. Kellar said.
Pierre employs 750 workers, most of whom were sent home after the accident so they could grieve and company officials could investigate, Mr. Keller said.
According to an e-mail sent by the West Chester Township Community Improvement Corp., preliminary reports indicate Mr. McCarty climbed on a rack to retrieve an item rather than using the required forklift or poker. The employee did not use the harness system available, either, the e-mail stated.
Pierre officials have been scheduled to attend tonight's township trustees meeting to discuss opportunities that township leaders can offer to keep the company, which is considering expanding, from perhaps leaving this fast-growing area, Mr. Kellar said.
