Several historic artifacts from a boarded-up school in Avondale will be preserved and incorporated into a new Rockdale Academy being built this summer.
The former Condon School is slated to be demolished this summer so a new $14 million Rockdale Academy can be built on-site as part of the district's proposed $1 billion school construction plan.
Cincinnati Public Schools' board voted Monday to include preservation costs of some architecture of the former Condon School in the base bid for Condon's demolition.
Items to be preserved and incorporated into the new Rockdale include two medallion-shaped designs from the front entrance of the building, all existing plaques and the valuable Rookwood tile from a fireplace inside the building. Estimated cost is $13,000.
That doesn't include all historic artifacts lining Condon's facade, but the board agreed to establish a fund for preservation of other items, either to be sold or for public display. The board hopes to raise donations to salvage items.
We want to be very careful to allow the public an opportunity to come forward, said board member Harriet Russell. The com mitment is to try to salvage as many of those artifacts as possible.
The fund will also be used to preserve historic artifacts from other schools slated for closure or demolition. Initial money for the fund will come from sale of Condon fixtures, such as cabinetry and porcelain sinks, said Chief Operating Officer Kent Cashell.
