Style extra: Cosmetology school a lesson in sisterhood

By Joy Kraft, jkraft@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Aveda Fredric's Institute makes beauty and wellness schooling a family affair. Three sisters graduated from the Hyde Park facility in two years, and the school has three other sibling pairs on their books, according to Julie Holzberger, owner and director of recruitment.

“Lisa Langdon graduated in cosmetology in July 2000 and is just getting back to work at Karen Taylor Salon in Milford after having a baby,” she says. Sister Christina Townsley graduated in esthiology in March and is job-hunting. And Lori Townsley, who will graduate in November in cosmetology, works at Pure Concepts in Kenwood.

Their grandmother, Bertha Townsley, has been a client at the institute since her first granddaughter started classes there in 1999. Clients come to the school for hair, skin, manicure and pedicure care by students supervised by licensed instructors.

The school has two other sibling pairs, plus Julie Holzberger's son, Daniel, and daughter, Nikki, who both graduated and work at Van Michael's in Atlanta.

The school, which received a second Award of Excellence from the Ohio Board of Cosmetologists, offers training in cosmetology for hair, skin and makeup, about 42 1/2 weeks; esthiology for careers in skin care, makeup and massage techniques, about 16 3/4 weeks, and nail aesthetics, about 300 hours. Information: 533-0700.

Hot for brides: Debra Moreland, noted bridal accessory designer and owner of Paris, 305 Benson Road, Reading, says jeweled barefoot sandals were getting a lot of eyes at the recent bridal shows at the Kitano Hotel in New York, especially since Lucky magazine highlighted them recently.

“I introduced them about two years ago, and they sold out of a Bergdorf holiday catalog twice, (and) they are really hot with the "destination' wedding crowd” that takes to the beaches and cruise boats for their ceremonies. You can see her barefoot sandals at www.weddingchannel.com and www.myglassslipper.com and look for “shoes” or “accessories” and “Paris.”

Ms. Moreland will be headed back to New York in May to work on a line of accessories for the Barneys of New York couture bridal designs — one-of-a-kind gowns from Chanel, Versace, Valentino and Alexander McQueen.

Shop for a cause: Parisian at Kenwood Towne Centre is ready for its 2002 Charity Sale event 6-10 a.m. Saturday. Shoppers buy $5 tickets from local charitable groups and get an early morning of shopping with a 20 percent discount throughout the store (with some exceptions). Refreshments and a chance to register to win a $1,000 Parisian shopping spree are included. Charities selling the $5 tickets retain the entire $5. For ticket information: 792-2400. The Charity Sale and Celebrate Education events raised more than $1.5 million for charities in 2001.

Trunk show: Bleyle knit sportswear in missy and petite sizes will be part of a trunk show 10 a.m.-5 p.m. next Tuesdayat Mike and Carol Trotta, 406 Walnut St., downtown. Information: 621-2930.

Buy at the bar: University of Cincinnati Design, Architecture, Art and Planning grad John Fowler and Michael Morganti will show their new — and, I'm told, teeny tiny — swimsuit line, 9 p.m. Thursday at Hamburger Mary's, 911 Vine St. downtown. Information: 381-6279.

Nad's for men: Nad's, the no-wax hair removal concoction of water, honey, lemon, molasses, glucose, sucrose, fructose and vinegar, has a version for men who want to get rid of hair on arms, legs, back, chest, neck and anywhere you slather it on. It comes with a prep soap and a smoothing balm as well as strips, spatula and mixing sticks. $29.95 at Walgreen's or www.nads.com.

Afshar jewelry: Ani Afshar, Chicago jeweler, is showing a fall line with an emphasis on freshwater pearls with black crystals and smokey topaz with garnets, all made with rose gold vermeil. The necklaces and earrings are favorites with celebs, including Brooke Shields and Madeleine Albright, and is carried by Harrod's in London. The line can be seen at Bella Donna in Glendale and Fitting Image in Blue Ash.

Fitness wear for moms: Liz Lange for Nike, the first maternity designer fitness collection to debut on the runway, is functional, stylish athletic wear made especially for moms-to-be. The line is made from DriFIT, a fabric that wicks moisture for rapid evaporation and includes a catsuit for yoga, workout tops, pants, shorts and jackets. $36-$90 at www.lizlange.com and www.niketown.com

Fly your flag: Old Navy stores have been selling American flag T-shirts for eight years, racking up more than 30 million sold. This year, it's asking customers to send in their favorite photos of family or friends wearing an Old Navy Flag T. The winner will get a $5,000 U.S. Savings bond. Deadline is May 7. Details at www.oldnavy.com.
