Tristate A.M. Report

New treatment for alcoholism studied

A monthly injection that may help treat alcoholism is being studied at the Cincinnati Veterans Affairs Medical Center and 24 other sites nationwide.

The medication is an injectable form of naltrexone, which has been on the market in pill form since 1995.

Police said the driver lost control in the left southbound lane at about 6:10 p.m., hit the concrete median and flipped. Two people in the car suffered minor injuries.

“The potential advancement is that people don't have to remember to take a pill once or twice a day. Instead, they may be able to gain better control over their dependence on alcohol from just a once-a-month injection,” said Dr. Robert Anthenelli, director of the substance dependence program at the VA Medical Center.

The study is funded in part by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, at the National Institutes of Health.

Vote on review of development delayed

A vote on whether to review Cincinnati's economic development efforts has been put off until May 1.

Democratic Councilmen John Cranley and David Pepper said the delay will give more time for a public hearing on their motion, which would urge creation of an independent development authority and require projects getting money from the city to be open to union and minority-owned contractors. The hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Bagels recalled, may be tainted

The second company in less than a month is recalling a breakfast sandwich because of concerns about contamination by bacteria.

Owens Country Sausage is recalling Bob Evans SnackWiches Ham and Cheese Bagels that were sold in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Maryland. The products involved had a May 11 sell-by date and the UPC code number 75900-00758.

Listeria can cause serious infections in young children and people with weakened immune systems. In this recall, no illnesses have been reported. Even so, customers should return the product to the store where purchased for a refund, company and health officials said.

For more information, call the company at (800) 939-2338.

Earlier this month, listeria concerns prompted MarketFare Foods to recall its Deli Pride Egg, Sausage & Cheese Biscuits.

Chase ends in wreck, charges

COLERAIN TWP. — Two people are facing charges after police say they tried to run down an off-duty Hamilton County sheriff's corrections officer, led them on a chase and crashed into another vehicle.

Darlene Parish, 45, of Winton Terrace is charged with robbery, failure to comply and assault, all felonies, and traffic violations from the incident Monday. Titus Lofton, 34, of Westwood is charged with complicity to robbery and complicity to assault, both felonies.

Police say the two were suspected of shoplifting from Dillard's in Northgate Mall about 4:45 p.m, but escaped after trying to run down the off-duty officer in the mall parking lot.

A Hamilton County sheriff's deputy spotted their car entering Ronald Reagan Highway eastbound from Colerain Avenue and pursued, sheriff's spokesman Steve Barnett said. Ms. Ferguson was the driver, he said.

The car went south onto Winton Road at a high speed, lost control and hit a car going north on Winton, Mr. Barnett said.

The driver of the car that was hit was not injured, he said.

Author to talk on medical ethics

Dr. Edmund Pellegrino, a nationally prominent health-care ethicist, will visit Cincinnati today to speak privately at Good Samaritan Hospital and publicly at Xavier University.

Dr. Pellegrino, professor emeritus at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington has written hundreds of articles and numerous books on medical ethics.

The public presentations will be held at 2 and 4 p.m. in the Schiff Family Conference Center at Xavier's Cintas Center.

Poets to speak here this week

Two poets who call themselves “Affrilachian,” a reference to their heritage as African-Americans from Appalachia, will be in Cincinnati this week to read from their work and discuss a related film.

The film, Coal Black Voices, uses images, poetry and narrative to challenge assumptions about race in Appalachia. It will be screened at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Reakirt Auditorium at the Cincinnati Museum Center.

The film will be followed by a discussion with the visiting poets, Frank X Walker and Crystal Wilkinson, as well as the filmmakers, Fred Johnson and Jean Donohue of the Media Working Group.

The poets will lead a series of writing workshops at the East End Community Heritage School and the Northside Community School today through Friday.

At 7 p.m. on Friday at the Pendleton Heritage Center at 2760 Eastern Ave., Mr. Walker, Ms. Wilkinson and students from the workshops will read from their work.

All of the events are free. Information: 251-0202.

OHIO TOWNSHIP — A 22-year-old Bethel man was killed Tuesday night when the motorcycle he was operating struck a guardrail on Ohio 132 just north of New Richmond.
