Wyclef Jean cancels on his own

Multiplatinum hip-hop star Wyclef Jean has canceled his headlining appearance at Thursday's Spring Concert at the University of Cincinnati's Shoemaker Center, becoming the first national entertainer to join the Cincinnati boycott without being targeted by boycott organizers.

“He was not contacted by any of the (boycott) leaders. He's doing this on his own,” said Miguel Baguer, a spokesman for his record label, Columbia.

“Because I believe there are ongoing civil rights violations in Cincinnati I have chosen to support the current boycott and not perform on May 2,” the former member of the Fugees said in a statement issued Tuesday by Columbia Records. “I hope my fans will understand my decision and join me in the support of human rights everywhere.”

Coalition for a Just Cincinnati co-chairwoman Amanda Mayes said the group hadn't contacted Wyclef Jean, calling the cancellation, “a help to our cause. We are glad to know that Wyclef is not coming to this city while the status quo remains.”

The university responded quickly, replacing Wyclef Jean with New Orleans rapper Juvenile. The multimillion-selling Juvenile, performed March 2 at Music Hall in a controversial show that featured an appearance by O.J. Simpson.

“We're working to make sure there's a concert at that date and to take care of students who have bought tickets,” said UC's Greg Hand.

Wyclef Jean's appearance was to be the second-to-last stop on a two-week tour of colleges. A major summer tour is planned to follow the June 18 release of his new CD, Masquerade.

The show was not a sell-out, but Mr. Hand did not know the number of tickets sold. A spokesman for Ticketmaster, which is handling sales for the show, refused comment.

Refunds are available at point of purchase. Tickets purchased online or by phone will be credited to the purchaser's credit card.
